About five years ago i noticed a few patches of lichens growing on the north side of my roof.

Lichen will build up on the north side of buildings and in areas shaded most. This can cause your roof shingles to bend warp and even separate from each other over time. Lichens and moss accelerate shingle deterioration by loosening shingle granules and exposing the asphalt and fiberglass base materials.

Sweep off dirt branches and debris and then wash down the roof surface with a garden. Inspect the roof shingles visually. They protect the base materials from sunlight and weathering. The lichen can penetrate your roof s exterior causing the shingles to may bleach your asphalt shingles lightening or changing the color.
