A lintel is a beam placed across the openings like doors windows etc. It is often found over portals doors windows and fireplaces. The internal timber lintels above the window are known as safe lintels. The roof load bears onto the inner leaf of the cavity wall.

The ends of timber lintels are very prone to rot if the wall gets wet perhaps through gutters overflowing. The inner lintel was made of timber in older buildings. Open back and open back returned lintels are most common for cavity walls and suitable for standard duty through to extra heavy loading conditions including direct roof and attic truss loading.
